GEM Companies – Colorado Springs, CO is seeking a WebSphere MQ Systems Administrator to join our team.

Position Description:

The WebSphere MQ Administrator is responsible for architectural designs, implementation, standards / governance, integration / deployment, monitoring, root cause analysis and performance tuning of medium-scale WMQ deployments. This will include the maintenance/support of a large number of medium-enterprise systems, problem resolution for middleware integration environment; installing, configuring and deploying Websphere MQ and MQ software products. Possess familiarity with varied concepts, standard best business practices, and procedures. Perform a variety of tasks as directed by the team lead or supervisor.   


  • Provide technical administration
  • Manage WebSphere MQ configurations
  • Uphold standards, guidelines, and best practices for implementations on multiple platforms across multiple environments
  • Perform the installation of patches
  • Troubleshoot complex problems, providing root cause analysis and remediation to mitigate future risk with appropriate Technical and Operational staff to resolve connectivity issues
  • Work with application staff to resolve messaging issues and be able to trace messages from origin to destination
  • Identify various MQ Objects
  • Set up MQ monitoring
  • Responsible for enterprise wide WebSphere MQ messaging infrastructure across distributed platforms including; UNIX, WINDOWS.
  • Works w/application development teams providing support of middleware components like MQI/JMS incl. application development cycles to implement, configure & debug app. problems as they relate to messaging.
  • Provides "customer focused" administrative support of middleware production, QA and development environments.
  • Evaluates and applies software upgrades and support packs as required to solve production problems and/or ensure compliance and system integrity.
  • Utilize industry standard technologies & methods to insure the integrity & recoverability of MQ based applications incl. but not limited to; backup & recovery, clustering, security, patch management, enterprise monitoring & performance tuning.
  • Performs strategic analysis and design of MQ infrastructure and makes recommendations on improvements and/or new systems required to meet business needs and future capacity.
  • Serve as technical resource to business analysts, solutions development and other groups responsible for application development standards, system design and integration.
  • Performs software installations and upgrades to WebSphere MQ servers and clients as well as maintains existing systems in accordance with established policies, procedures and service level agreements.
  • Performs engineering tasks related to managing WebSphere MQ solutions for corporate and remote systems in a large scale environment Maintains professional knowledge of WebSphere MQ hosted on AIX, Linux, Windows  as required for the administration and support of a medium scale distributed environment
  • Participate in document and lessons learned discussions from previous implementations and update implementation plans to address documented issues.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining professional documentation of server(s) / application(s) / network configuration(s) as they relate to middleware components and infrastructure.
  • Ensure systems remain at operational excellence during infrastructure improvements (hardware/software upgrades, server migrations/consolidations, application deployment, etc).
  • Solutions will be manageable, scalable and security conscience.
  • Participates in regular on call rotation, providing 24*7 support meeting business SLA's.
  • Understand, and comply with desktop and server security standards including Sarbanes-Oxley.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor junior engineers supporting them to achieve excellence in their fields of interest and responsibility.
  • Working experience in at least 3 of the following areas with solid understanding in all others; Competency in Java/J2EE/C programming with development strategies of MQ hosted applications, WebSphere MQ 6.x and higher, MQI/JMS messaging integration, Java/J2EE application standards and governance, WebSphere MQ Backup and Recovery Planning, WebSphere MQ server implementation and maintenance, WebSphere MQ infrastructure performance monitoring, analysis and tuning.


  • WebSphere MQ Administration experience (V6.2 & above) on distributed platforms (one or more flavors of UNIX and Windows)
  • Should possess good working knowledge and understanding of Unix and Windows Operating Systems
  • Working knowledge with in product & Fixpack installations and version upgrades of WebSphere MQ
  • Able to administer the product using the command line
  • Proficient in problem determination, troubleshooting, backup & recovery
  • Working knowledge in using MQSC commands
  • Working knowledge in using Distributed Queue Management
  • Working knowledge in MQ channel configuration using different transmission protocols
  • Working knowledge with MQ Clustering
  • Able to manage, configure and monitor MQ Listeners, Command Servers, Channel initiators, Trigger Monitors, MQ Log files & Dead Letter Queues
  • Familiar with MQ Client applications & MQ client configuration
  • Able to setup security for WebSphere MQ queues & other objects for data access and for administration using role-based security
  • Working knowledge in using MQ monitoring tools like Tivoli Omegamon
  • Working knowledge of MQ Tracing 2) WebSphere Message Broker experience (V6 & above) on distributed platforms
  • Possess good communication and written skills
  • Knowledge of WMB Administration
  • Knowledge of AIX 5.3 and higher
  • 1+ years application development with combined experience in MQI / JMS and Java/C programming languages.
  • Have been exposed to such MQ monitoring tools as; Omegamon, Qpasa, BMC Patrol or Candle  desired
  • Working knowledge of logical partition management (LPAR's) and virtualization (VIO) on AIX systems
  • Ability to provide 7x24 rotating on-call support
  • Ability to work outside normal 8 to 5 office hours including weekends as necessary

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • SSL Configuration on WebSphere MQ is an added advantage
  • Familiar with PCF commands is an added advantage
  • ITIL Foundation v3 Certification
  • Working knowledge with small to medium scale environment
  • Some experience with WebSphere or JBOSS Application Servers

Education:  A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or other related scientific or technical discipline with 3 or more years related professional experience. (Education can be substituted for 7 years of experience).

Clearance: This position requires U.S. DOD Secret Clearance and a DHS Suitability. GEM will sponsor the candidate in obtaining the clearance if candidate does not already have one. Must be a US Citizen to apply for this position.
